A lot has already been done in terms of more sustainable display development. But not everything that says “sustainable” is actually sustainable. There is a lot more to consider here. Many environmentally relevant decisions have to be made before a display arrives at its destination. It starts, of course, with the choice of materials, the printing inks and the avoidance of finishing as far as possible and continues with the outer packaging, logistics and transport routes. Significant savings in materials, resources andCO2 emissions can be made in advance.
The new “Xmas 2020” floor display offers many advantages
But how does it work in practice to think in such complex sustainable cycles – what is important? From design to development to the finished product, we worked with the print shop to optimize Weleda’s floor display from start to finish. To this end, we have developed numerous guidelines that will have a lasting effect in the long term.
1. save material
The new floor display is much more compact and still offers sufficient space for goods. At the same time, it is very easy to handle and can be set up in just a few simple steps. Thanks to the redesign and the special folding mechanism, we were able to reduce the amount of material required from around 10 kilograms per display to just under 3 kilograms. And with the same stability. The floor display also takes a 360° approach to sustainability: it is made from 100% recycled material. To ensure the best possible recycling cycle, we only used environmentally friendly inks for printing and completely avoided unnecessary finishes such as film lamination or special varnishes.
2. reduce resources
The foldable and space-saving design also proves its worth when repackaging. Thanks to the compact size when folded, not only is the packaging volume of the shipping boxes noticeably reduced, but also the consumption of padding and protective material, which we were even able to completely dispense with in the new Xmas display.
3. optimize packaging, transport & shipping
The new narrow dimensions of the shipping carton are smaller than the usual displays and therefore also reduce the required pallet volume. And by as much as 75 %. This significantly reduces the number of Euro pallets required for further logistics. Of course, this is also directly reflected in the lower number of trucks required and the resulting transportation costs. The lower packaging volume also leads to significantly lower storage costs in the distribution center.
The extra savings for the climate: we were able to significantly reduceCO2 emissions thanks to the special design of the floor display. Significantly less material consumption for the display and the packaging material through to fewer trucks for transport to the distribution centers – this ultimately means a positive contribution to climate protection.
4. easy handling & assembly in the trade
Basically, our aim is for our floor displays to present our customers’ products in retail outlets in line with the brand and to sell them in the best possible way. However, the more convinced retailers are of the display and its handling, the better. This is why simple and uncomplicated assembly of the floor displays is also an important criterion for us. A few simple steps – and the display is ready. The feedback from the customer’s sales department and from the trade: simply a great solution.
